Georgian-Armenian Philology

At the beginning of the XX century, a new direction of research was determined in Georgian Humanities, named “Armenian - Georgian Philology” and its aim was to study the common problems of Christian Caucasus, and it was later followed by the establishment of the Georgian school of Armenian studies.

The main topic of interest for Georgian Armenology is the study of Armenian – Georgian linguistic, literary, historical, political, and religious relationships. In Georgia the rise of interest towards the Armenian world, Armenians’ history and culture (in past as well as in present), was caused by the special environment - cultural and social, that appeared as a result of two nations existing too close to each-other during centuries, such as: the common geopolitical and religious space, common Saints, common ancestral, polemics around confession, relationships with strong neighboring countries and etc.

The Georgian-Armenian Philology of today is still interested in the study of the alphabets and literature that originated in the Caucasus, the relationship of Georgian and Armenian translations of the Bible, the literary work of the Armenians that had already adopted Georgian as their native language, translating ancient Armenian sources into Georgian, etc.
