Spiritual-intellectual Tradition of the Christian East

This sphere of research unifies different genres in the Christian East – Biblical studies, hermenteutics, polemics, hagiography, hymnography etc. – however a special emphasis will be made on the theological-philosophical tradition. Of a central interest are the sources that deal with the theological-doctrinal debates, church councils, different and contradicting arguments of different of the rivaling parties. Besides, in the focus of the research will be reception of the Greek philosophical-dialectical tradition in the Eastern Christian thought and utilization and development of the Greek philosophical legacy by Christian authors.

Besides the Byzantine Greek sources, important for the research sphere is the spiritual-intellectual tradition of other Christian nations – Georgian, Armenian, Coptic, Syrian, Arab etc. – their translated and original literature, as well as literary-translational relationships between those nations.

The researches in this field aim at investigating the research subject in a broad historical-cultural perspective, with comparative interconnections on the one hand between different representatives of the Eastern Christianity and, on the other hand, between those nations with representatives of the non-Christian nations of the East as well as with the representatives of the Western Christian nations.
